  What is Chiropractic Treatment?
Chiropractic is a straight-forward method of adjusting the bones of your body to maintain the correct alignment of your spine and to ensure that your body's nerve supply works efficiently.

Through these subtle adjustments, chiropractic treatment can relieve pain and discomfort, increase mobility and provide a route to better health.

Chiropractors use only their hands to make adjustments to the bones of your body. The key to the success of the adjustments is in the speed, dexterity and accuracy with which they are performed.

The gentle nature of the McTimoney method makes it especially suitable for people of all ages including young babies, pregnant women and the elderly. The following conditions often benefit from treatment:

  • Back, neck and shoulder pain
  • Pain, discomfort and stiffness in joints and bones
  • Migraine and tension headaches
  • Muscular aches and pains
  • Sciatica
  • Whiplash injury
  • Sports injuries
  •   What to expect when you come for a treatment?
On your first visit I will take a thorough case history, asking you about your symptoms in detail and other personal information such as past illnesses, operations and injuries. All of the questions are very important as they give valuable clues about your body.

Then I will do some tests, such as muscle strength, reflexes and blood pressure. This helps me evaluate your general health as well as your presenting symptoms, reach a diagnosis, and make sure that chiropractic is suitable. The diagnosis will be explained to you and a plan for your course of treatment outlined. Providing that there is no reason why you cannot receive chiropractic care at your first visit, I will check your entire body for chiropractic subluxations (minor joint misalignments) and will make the necessary adjustments.

The treatment plan will be designed not just to alleviate your immediate symptoms, but also to try to make sure that the problem is fully healed and so it can be prevented from happening again. It is important that you attend for the whole course of the treatment and do not stop the moment you are pain-free. I will assess your progress at each session and may need to revise your treatment plan. If you have made significant progress before the end of your plan it will be shortened as I would not want you to be coming for treatments any longer than you need to.

You may be asked to avoid certain tasks initially, or asked to do them in a modified way. I may give you advice on how to improve your posture and you may need to follow specific exercises. These will all aid your recovery and help prevent recurrences of your problem.
      Commonly asked questions:
      Is Chiropractic treatment painful?
Many patients seeking chiropractic care are already in pain and may have been for some time. The McTimoney technique utilises low-force, swift adjustments that usually feel quite light and are rarely painful. After the first treatment you may feel a little tender or stiff but this is usually short-lived.
      How effective is it?
The majority of chiropractic patients find relief from their symptoms in only a few weeks. Factors that can affect speed of recovery include age, fitness level and nature of the problem, but on the whole most people are "extremely" or "very satisfied" with the results of chiropractic.
How often will I have to attend?
A short course of weekly treatments is recommended to start with. The number varies but most people find that after 4-6 weeks they are either feeling better or have found total relief from their symptoms.

Once your body has learned to keep its alignment between weekly sessions, the treatment interval is increased in stages until you only need to attend six-monthly or yearly to suit your body. The stresses and strains of everyday life are ongoing and, just like maintaining any machine or going for a check-up with a dentist, it is far easier to correct minor problems that are developing before a full-scale emergency occurs.

You are not obliged to have ongoing chiropractic care once your immediate problem has resolved but recent research suggests that there are many benefits to general wellbeing in attending regular maintenance treatments in the absence of physical pain. Chiropractic aims to not only realign the joints of the body but also it ensures that the nerves function to their full capacity, enabling the brain and the body to communicate well with each other, thus, helping to maintain a healthy body. You may also find that other symptoms you have such as bloated stomach, breathing problems and headaches will respond positively to chiropractic care.
      How much will it cost?
The initial consultation and treatment session costs £60 and lasts between one and a half hours to two hours. All treatments thereafter last approximately 30 minutes and cost £35 per session.
Will I have to take my clothes off?
While it is possible to treat through light clothing, it is more difficult to assess your alignment and some adjustments may be less effective. Patients usually undress down to their underwear. Some patients prefer to wear shorts or thin clothing or there is a gown available in the clinic.
