H5N1 Bird Flu - Public Health Update
It is important to remember that currently H5N1 avian flu is predominantly
a disease of birds. The virus does not pass easily from birds to humans.
However, in the rare instances where humans have become infected - as a
result of close contact with infected poultry - the virus has caused severe
disease with a high fatality rate in humans. While H5N1 infections have not
been reported in the UK, it is prudent that the public is provided with
clear factual information on this issue.
The Department of Health has produced a leaflet and poster (Links to the PDFs can be found below)
giving advice for those who may be travelling to, or returning from, areas
affected by bird flu. The leaflet provides guidance on:
- how to reduce the risk of exposure to the virus
- the signs and symptoms of the infection
- what to do if a person is concerned that they may have been infected.
